Amish Lifestyle in Southeast Minnesota
The Amish around Harmony are “Old Order” Amish which means they are very private and have strong Christian convictions that bind their community together, enabling them to resist the ways of modern society. They began to move into the Harmony area in 1974 and have grown to about 150 families.
The Harmony Amish do not have electricity, telephones, or indoor plumbing except cold water in the kitchen. Their local transportation is horse and buggy; although, they will ride in cars, trains, and buses. The Amish do not attend public schools and graduate after eighth grade from one room schools.
A unique culture that has changed little for over 400 years
